Homemade Grout Cleaner — This One Is SUPER EFFECTIVE

homemade grout cleaner

Grout wasn’t exactly made to look beautiful, but if the grout in your home is dirty, it definitely won’t help to make your home more inviting. Fortunately, you can use a homemade grout cleaner to tidy it up. In most cases, you can make a cleaner out of ingredients that you already have in your home.

The problem with grout is that it can be notoriously difficult to keep clean. It’s almost as if it’s constantly attracting dirt and holding onto it for no good reason at all. The good news is that you can make a homemade cleaner and clean it up quickly.

One of the reasons why it’s very important to keep grout clean is because prolonged dryness will cause grout staining, and in many cases, the staining cannot be removed.

You might want to grab a grout cleaning brush. If the homemade cleaners in this article don’t do justice for your grout, then you might want to consider buying an industrial grade cleaner.

Vinegar Grout Cleaner

For this recipe, you’ll need ¼ cup vinegar, baking soda and salt. All you need to do is mix these ingredients together inside of a container. When you’re ready, apply the solution to the grout and let it sit for about 20 minutes. You can scrub it into the grout during the 20 minutes.

After the time is up, rinse the area with plenty of water. Since this formulation involves the use of vinegar, you want to be careful and never use it on travertine tile, limestone or marble.

Mild Grout Cleaner

This recipe is undoubtedly the mildest of them all, but it can still be very effective, and you can use it on all sorts of other surfaces. It’s frequently used as poultice to eliminate stains from natural stone.

This recipe consists of 1 cup of water and 3 cups of baking soda. Just mix the ingredients and apply the resulting paste to unclean grout. Allow it to sit for about 10 minutes and rinse the area well.

Stronger Grout Cleaner

Here is another great recipe. It calls for ¼ cup white vinegar, 1/3 cup of ammonia and ½ cup baking soda. Just mix the ingredients together and apply the resulting paste to the grout. The ammonia and vinegar will work to clear even the dirtiest grout.

Let the paste cover the grout for about 20 minutes. Rinse the area thoroughly with warm water. You can use this formulation on the toughest stains.

Bleach Grout Cleaner

You’ll want to reserve this formulation for light colored grout because it contains bleach. You’ll need to mix ¾ cup of baking soda and ¼ cup bleach. Apply the resulting solution to the dirty grout and let it sit for 30 minutes.

However, keep in mind that the longer the solution is allowed to sit the more it will bleach the grout. If used on colored grout, it will make it fade.

Alcohol Cleaner

The last formulation we’re going to recommend is great for removing mildew from grout. You’ll need to mix 1 cup of water, ¼ cup of alcohol and ¼ cup of bleach together. After mixing the solution together, apply it to the grout and let it sit for about 25 minutes.

The bleach is able to kill the mildew, and the alcohol will disinfect the entire area. If the mildew returns, go ahead and reapply the cleaner.

These are some of the best homemade grout cleaners that you can make from readily available, household ingredients. They’ll get the job done every time.

While cleaning grout isn’t the most glorious or exciting cleaning jobs you can do at home, it will certainly improve the overall appearance of your bathroom, kitchen or laundry room.
