When you first buy it, a mattress is almost like a child – innocent and beautiful. If you have kids, then you’ve noticed that it doesn’t take long for the mattress to become soiled. A number of nasty stains can accumulate on a mattress, and one of the worst is urine.
We’re going to give you the knowledge to teach you how to get pee out of a mattress. Whether it’s from your child or pet, urine can produce some very unsightly stains, and in most cases, the worst part about it is the odor.
You won’t find too many odors that are worse than old urine. Fortunately, there are several ways to remove it, and they’re very effective at removing urine from a mattress.
How to Remove Dry Urine Stains
It’s quite common to deal with dry urine stains. To get started, get the stained area damp with water but make sure that the material doesn’t become overly saturated with water. Excessive wetness can actually spread the urine and make the problem worse.
The goal is to dilute the strength and odor of the stain. Next, sprinkle the stain with borax. The purpose of the borax is to neutralize the odor. It’s important to make sure that the entire stain is covered. Like baking soda, borax can irritate the skin.
Next, rub the borax into the stain very thoroughly. It must be able to get beneath the surface to give you a desirable effect. If you have any concerns about the toxicity of borax, you can wear some simple rubber gloves.
Make sure to let the stain dry completely. You should always clean your mattress in a well-ventilated space. The next step involves vacuuming up the powder. It depends on how much powder you’ve used. If you didn’t use a lot, then there might not be any powder to vacuum.
How to Remove a Wet Urine Stain
Dry urine stains can be very annoying, but wet stains can be even worse. If you’re dealing with a wet urine stain, whether from a pet or child, you need to immediately grab a cloth or sponge and absorb as much of the liquid as possible.
Next, dampen the entire area, which will dilute the urine. Use the sponge to continue absorbing as much of the urine as possible. Repeat this process until you can’t really smell the odor anymore.
If you’d like to kill the bacteria in the urine, feel free to apply some rubbing alcohol to the stain, and you can also use vinegar. After you’ve done all that you can to remove the urine, let the mattress dry.
Make a Cleaning Solution for Urine Stains
Maybe you need some additional cleaning power. To make your own cleaning solution, grab a spray bottle, funnel, measuring cup and tablespoon.
- 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide
- 1 drop of liquid dish soap
- 3 tablespoons of baking soda
Once you’ve mixed these ingredients inside of a spray bottle, you’re ready to tackle the pee. Thoroughly mix the bottle and spray the solution onto the mattress. The stain should disappear and lift within five to 10 minutes.
If there is baking soda left over on the stain, just wait until it dries and vacuum it away. These are some of the most effective ways to remove dry or wet urine stains. They can be used to remove both the color and odor produced by pee.
