What Do Guinea Pigs Eat

Guinea pigs are cute, furry little animals. If you’ve ever owned one of these creatures, then you’ve probably noticed that it never seems to stop eating. These animals love to snack on daily greens, grass hay and pellets. They might also eat the occasional fruit snack.

At some point, you might fall under the impression that your guinea pig was literally born to eat. Since these animals have an endless appetite, you should know what to feed them if you own one.

It can be difficult to choose the safest foods that a guinea pig will enjoy. Obviously, they need a fresh source of water. One of the best foods that a guinea pig will eat is high-quality grass hay. A great example is Timothy hay, which is quite easy to find.

These animals will eat many different foods, but some of the best foods to feed them are broccoli, beetroot, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, cucumber, peas, kale and spinach. It’s also OK to feed them fruit, but since it has high sugar content, you don’t want to give them too much.

Some great foods to feed these animals are:

  • Strawberries
  • Apples
  • Gooseberries
  • Grapefruits
  • Grapes
  • Bananas
  • Mangos
  • Kiwis
  • Pears

In The Wild

Most people never see guinea pigs in the wild, but they do exist. When not in captivity, these fury little creatures enjoy eating seeds, plant stems and leaves. Unlike rabbits, they aren’t strictly herbivores, so they don’t have a problem eating meat.

However, it’s not every day that you’ll be able to witness these guys eating anything other than plants and vegetables. You can tell by their size that guinea pigs spend most of their waking hours eating.

Baby Guinea Pigs

A baby guinea pig might be adorable, but it’s also very hungry. The neat thing about these animals is that they can eat pellets from birth, so you can feed them the same standard pellets that you’d feed an adult. A great food for younger guinea pigs is Timothy hay. Vegetables are also great choices.

Some other great grasses to consider feeding them are meadow grass and blue grass. It actually needs these foods early on, or it can develop problems with its teeth.

Best Way to Feed Guinea Pigs

There are some great feeding tips that you should be aware of. First, variety is very important. They love to eat a wide range of fruits and veggies, so you should give them what they want. However, make sure to keep fruits down to a minimum.

The primary diet of a guinea pig should consist of leafy vegetables. It’s also important to keep the number of carrots that you give them to a minimum. Celery should be cut into small, manageable pieces. Cruciferous veggies should be kept to a minimum because they can cause gas.

These are things like Brussel sprouts, broccoli and cabbage. Some people feed their pig iceberg lettuce, but since it contains minimal nutrients and has the potential to cause loose stool, it might not be the best choice.
