Most starfish are equipped with five to six arms, but there are some species that have a whopping 50 arms. It’s these amazing arms that give the starfish its unique appearance.

Something that makes these creatures even more unique is the way that they eat. Unlike many other creatures on the planet, the mouth of a starfish is on the bottom. The mouth actually opens straight into the esophagus and moves into the cardiac stomach.

Unlike most other creatures of the sea, the starfish has two different stomachs. Since it’s actually a predator, the starfish eats a variety of bivalves, such as mussels, oysters and clams. They’ve also been known to eat fish that move very slowly.

There are some species that eat decomposed animals and plants, but in general, these creatures will eat anything that gets in front of them. Contrary to popular belief, these creatures of the sea really aren’t fish, even with the word “fish” in their name.

Sea stars consume food by prying open the shells of their prey. They use their arms to open oysters and clams. They actually push their stomachs out of their mouths and into the shell of the prey animal, so they can partially digest the prey and retract their stomach.

Chocolate Chip Starfish

There are several different species of starfish, and these are some of the most well-known. Since these guys are scavengers, they’ll eat several different foods that have fallen to the bottom of the sea or fish tank.

Since they’re also predators, they have no problem consuming corals, snails and small animals.

If you happen to own this creature as a pet, you can feed him squid, shrimp and muscles. These are some of their favorite foods to eat, but there are several other choices to consider.

What Do Starfish Eat In The Ocean?

The sea star is a strong hunter, and when living in an ocean environment, it loves to feed on mollusks. Some other major dinner items are sand dollars, oysters, mussels and clams. Many of these creatures are attached to rocks and cannot escape very quickly.

They’re also known to consume injured fish and snails. The ocean is a very large place, so there are a number of different food options that sea stars have to choose from.

Crown of Thorns Starfish

The crown-of-thorns sea star is native to coral reefs that are found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean and plays an important role in the environment. These are certainly some of the coolest looking sea stars out there, and adults COTS eat scleractinian exclusively.

However, isn’t all that important for these creatures because they can survive without feeding for a period of up to 9 months.

Brittle Starfish

Here is another common species. These guys are detrivores and prefer to eat decaying matter. They also love to eat plankton. A number of brittle stars will kill and consume small animals.

Like other starfish species, they actually feed on their prey externally, by forcing their stomach over the prey animal. Once the stomach comes out through the mouth, it’s almost certainly too late for the prey.

Blue Star Fish

The blue star fish is a common pet and will eat small pieces of clam meat or tablets, which should be placed under the Blue Linckia sea star. If you’re looking for a great way to remove the algae from the inside of your fish tank, blue starfish are very affordable options.
