Why Most People Own Carpeting

There are several reasons why MOST homes are outfitted with carpeting. The right carpeting will add texture, patterns and color to your home.

You can’t deny that carpeting adds special warmth that you cannot get from other types of flooring. However, there are countless reasons to outfit YOUR home with carpeting, and fortunately, there are several ways to keep it clean and avoid serious stains.

The First Line of Defense

To keep your carpet looking fantastic, you have the first line of defense, which is vacuuming. Over time, a carpet becomes filled with grit and dirt, and if you don’t vacuum regularly, you’re doing yourself a huge disservice and allowing the dirt and grit to be pressed deep into your carpet.

Once these particles go deep enough, you will have a hard time getting them out. Dirt particles actually damage your carpet’s fibers. You should give your carpet a very thorough cleaning about once every 12 to 14 months, but there is certainly nothing wrong with cleaning it more often.

If you frequently have people over or have kids, then you will need to clean your carpet even more often than most people. It’s especially important to clean it often if you have light-colored carpeting.

The lighter the carpeting the more frequently you need to clean it. You don’t want to give dirt and other particles time to seep into your light-colored carpet.

Checking Colorfastness

It’s true that colorfast carpet will not fade, change or bleed. You can clean it regularly and remove stains, and it will stay the same. You need to find out if your carpeting is Colorfast because if it is then you will need to clean it differently.

Fortunately, it’s not difficult to check your carpet and see if it’s Colorfast. First, you need to get a scrap piece of your carpet, or you can use an inconspicuous piece. You can perform this test on carpet in your closet, for example.

  • First, vacuum the carpet
  • Second, dampen a cloth with stain remover or cleaner
  • Third, lay the cloth on the piece of carpet for one hour
  • Fourth, blot the damp area with a dry, white cloth

If you find that the carpeting is stained with carpet dyes, then you need to test using another product and continue testing until you find a cleaning product that doesn’t cause the carpet to bleed.

Preventive Measures

When you decide to give your carpet a hardcore cleaning, you need to protect your furniture, sub-floor and carpet padding. You should simply remove the furniture from the room you’re cleaning, or you can cover it. First, vacuum the carpet thoroughly. If possible, use a high-end rental cleaner. You can even have it professional cleaned.

Cleaning Carpet with Water Extraction

The majority of carpet cleaners use a process called water extraction. Another name is steam cleaner – you’ve probably heard of it! This type of cleaner injects a special solution into the carpeting and pulls the solution from the carpet along with the dirt and other unwanted particles.

If you can afford it, you should hire professional carpet cleaners. However, for everyone else, the use of a quality steam cleaner is the closest that you can get to a professional clean.
